the smaller planet

Nassau, Bahamas

July 2024

So the quick and dirty on Nassau….. more info to follow later, maybe.

The water is beautiful. The people and crafts are beautiful. The folks who know how (or have been trained how) to provide “service” are generally in the nicer resorts. As with many Island nations/communities, they operate on Island Time. Things will generally not move rapidly, to include meal times. If you have an appointment for something, or a reservation, best not to look too closely at the minute hand.

Things are expensive. There does seem to be a “tourist tax” with “locals” getting better deals at the food truck than the tourists (openly). There is also a 10% VAT and 15% Mandatory Gratuity (you WILL appreciate our service!) added to seemingly every transaction, including at convenience stores and definitely at restaurants.

We stayed 1 night near Junkanoo Beach, and several more nights at Paradise Island (Atlantis Resort). DEFINITELY different vibes. If you are not at an “All Inclusive Resort”, then consider NOTHING included. Maybe towels. As long as you accept this going in, no worries.

It is definitely a beautiful place, with lots to do. We spend a morning fishing and snorkeling on our own boat with crew, and another morning on jet skis. A lot of time at the beach and the Aquaventure Water Park. Some of us left some money in the Casino, some of us took some home. It is a good adventure, as long as you know what to expect.

Oh, and try the Guava Duff for dessert.
